A power outage will take place in downtown Steinbach later today.

Scott Powell with Manitoba Hydro says a major feeder line serving parts of the downtown has been damaged and crews will need to disrupt service in order to make repairs.

The outage will take place on the northeast side of Main Street between Friesen and Hespeler, impacting approximately 940 customers.

Powell says the interruption will commence Friday at 5pm and last until about 6:30pm.

Manitoba Hydro isn't certain when the damage occurred, though Powell says it may have happened in Tuesday night's wind storm.

"It appears it was caused by a tree, most likely from the wind the other night that caused the tree to come into contact with the conductor and cause that damage," he says.

Powell notes it's important the work be done today, before one of the wires on the feeder line crashes down, causing further damage.

He adds they decided to wait until the end of the work day before making repairs.
