A late goal by Zach Purcell gave the Pistons a late lead and they managed to hang on to defeat the Waywayseecappo Wolverines 4-3 to wrap up their 4 game home stand on Sunday night.

Carter Loney broke off an absolute beautiful, highlight reel goal as while on a power play, he made his way back to the blue line before dancing right through a Wayway checker, then Loney walked into the scoring area, picked his spot and fired an absolute lazer that beat the Wolverines goalie and shattered his water bottle in the process. For Loney, it was goal number nine on the year while the lone assist went to Caydin Cleland.

Another goal in the period this time off the stick of Ty Naaykens who stuff home his seventh of the year off a nifty reverse pass from behind the net courtesy of Bryce Young to make it 2-0. Loney nabbed his second point of the period with a helper as well.

Wayway pushed to get something going after the Naaykens goal but Matt Lenz hung in while the Wolverines crashed towards the net. Lenz managed to knock away any pucks before they got into premium scoring areas.

Lenz finished with 8 saves in the frame and the Pistons took a 2-0 lead into the intermission.

More stellar play from Lenz in the middle period as he made a number of big saves as the Wolverines tried to claw their way back into the game. Waywayseecappo had a big edge in shots in the second period firing 11 towards the Steinbach net while only surrendering 5 attempts on theirs. The score remained 2-0 heading into the third.

A wonderful pass from Codey Behun found a wide open Kyle Bettens who hammered home his 10th of the season to give Steinbach a 3-0 lead.

Wayway never gave up and managed to score off a Pistons turnover to cut the lead to 3-1. Some questionable penalties put Steinbach down and the Wolverines took advantage scoring a pair of power play goals to even things up at 3-3.

As fans settled in for overtime, a chip pass in the Wolverines zone found Purcell who managed to get a wrister towards the net that beat the goalie and turned into the eventual game winner, 4-3. For Purcell, he continues his hot streak as he now has nine goals on the season. The winner was assisted by Behun and Bettens.

Lenz and the defenders held the fort in the final minute and the Pistons skated off with a 4-3 win.

The power play was 1-2 while the penalty kill was 4-6.

Steinbach will travel to Virden on Thursday night before heading up to OCN for back to back games Friday and Saturday. All three games will be on MIX 96 and SteinbachOnline.com starting at 7:15 pm.
