A man is in custody after fleeing from a serious collision in Grunthal earlier today.

At around 11:30 AM this morning two vehicles collided at the intersection of PR 205 and PR 216, towards the south end of the community. According to St. Pierre-Jolys RCMP, a car heading east on PR 205 was hit by a northbound pickup truck that had proceeded across PR 216 when it was unsafe to do so. They note the collision occurred at a high speed and both vehicles sustained significant damage. STARS, paramedics, and the Hanover Fire Department were all called in to assist.

Police say one vehicle contained an older male and the other contained two youths; a male and a female. Following the accident, they say the female was airlifted to hospital by STARS with undetermined injuries. The injuries of the other two parties involved also remain unknown

Multiple people going about their business nearby report seeing the collision first hand. Some say they observed an individual exit one of the wrecked vehicles with what looked like a firearm and run into the community. Others say they saw RCMP officers and police dogs scouring the area in what appeared to be a manhunt.

Hearing that there may be a dangerous individual within their community, Green Valley School temporarily went into “Hold and Secure”. The doors were locked from the inside and staff and students were told to stay put.

RCMP confirm that the male youth fled the collision, ran into Grunthal, and was apprehended shortly afterward. Despite rumors, officials stress that the male did not have a weapon of any kind. Police say he is now in custody and facing a variety of undisclosed charges. Once the male was apprehended, Green Valley School was notified and their Hold and Secure was lifted.

While both vehicles involved sustained significant damage, the extent of the injuries to those involved remains undisclosed.
