Nighthawks winning streak stomped out by Oil Caps

The Niverville Nighthawks couldn't extend their winning streak on Friday night as they fell to the Virden Oil Capitals 6-2.

It was a big night for Andrew from Niverville who got to be the guest announcer, part of the Nighthawks raising awareness for Down Syndrome Awareness Month.

Virden came into the CRCC and executed their game plan. Making few mistakes, the Nighthawks couldn't find a way to break through early on and in turn, the Oil Caps managed to capitalize on their chances.

Shots were 7-6 in favor of the Nighthawks but it was Virden that took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission.

In the second, the wheels fell off for Niverville as the Oil Caps exploded offensively with four goals in the middle frame to lead 5-0.

The Nighthawks did push to try and get on the board but were turned away by some strong goaltending by Virden's Eric Reid. 

In the third, Virden buried another goal early to make it a 6-0 game.

The back half of the third finally saw Niverville get on the board as Brendan Kerr buried his 6th of the year on a power play to make it a 6-1 game. Eric Martin picked up the lone assist.

Desmond Johnson of Niverville scored his first goal of the year a few minutes later but that would be it for the Nighthawk's offense as the game finished with Virden on top 6-2.

Niverville finished 1-5 on the power play and 2-2 on the penalty kill.

The MJHL's newest franchise will have a chance at redemption on Sunday when they travel to Virden.
