Steinbach city council has approved the opening of another 35 residential lots in Lexington Village. The new neighbourhood is in the southwest corner of the city and is focused on providing affordable housing. The first homes went up in 2016 and councillor Susan Penner says it is hard to believe that the development is already into its fourth phase.

"Lexington Village has just grown so quickly. The developers are obviously providing for a need in our community, so I'm very thankful that that's happening and that they are willing to invest in our community and that it's providing for affordable housing. It's a huge, important part of our community."

Phases one through three included 168 housing units. With the additional 35 housing units in phase four, the development will have grown to over 200 homes in just

(New lots are outlined in black)three years. The opening of the additional lots includes the addition of two new streets that have been named York Crescent and Essex Drive.

Deputy Mayor Michael Zwaagstra says he is equally impressed by how quickly Lexington Village is being developed. He lives in the area and says he now no longer considers himself to live on the outskirts of the city.

"It's good to see because, obviously, the more residential units that we have, the more housing that we have, the more options there are for families, particularly young families that are looking to get into the housing market. We want to make sure that people who want to live in Steinbach are able to do so and one of the ways to do that is to make sure that we have lots of housing options available."
