The Steinbach Chamber of Commerce has hired Gwen Reimer as the new Program Director for Eastman Immigrant Services. She succeeds Josie Fast who left for a different job.

Reimer has more than 16 years of experience working with newcomers, teaching English through South East English and Literacy Services (SEELS), the Red River College Training Centre and working as the Volunteer and Integration Coordinator for Eastman Immigrant Services. She says it is a joy to work with newcomers.

"As I've been teaching them, working in the classroom with them, I have come to love the different cultures, love the different nationalities. I love working with the team as

Gwen Reimer we, together, serve our community in welcoming the newcomers."

She adds it is important to her to make them feel welcome and at ease as they settle here.

"To understand where they are coming from is huge. Some of them come with a lot of barriers so it's just a matter of loving them and making them feel comfortable."

Reimer says there continues to be a steady influx of immigrants to the Steinbach area, many of them being sponsored in by family members who moved here in previous years from places like Russia, Syria, India and the Philippines.
