The City of Steinbach has donated a piece of A.D. Penner Park for the construction of a new BMX track.

Steinbach Action Sports Council has planned a new three phase park with the first phase coming to completion this September. Council member Jeremy Romand says they are still busy trying to fundrasie for the next two phases.

“Overall, the project will cost approximately $30,000. The city is putting up $1,000 worth of dirt; we also have a few other businesses putting in some money. We should have enough dirt for phase one, but we still need to pay the guy who is building it.”

The first phase of the track will be termed a "pumptrack," which is a series of rollers and sloping turns set in a consistent succession to provide the rider with a smooth, wavelike riding experience. The pumptrack is a progressional tool that teaches bike-body separation and weight transfer to beginners; as well as manuals and jumps to intermediate and expert level ridrs.

All three phases will be built in between the pond and the baseball diamonds at the east end of the park. Romand says they are currently consulting with a professional track designer from Fernie, BC. He says he wants the park to be a highlight in Steinbach.

“The plan is to get everything done in three years. We want to build a high-class park. We don't want to just build something that is mediocre. We want to build something that will attract people from out of town.”

Right now there is temperoary track built with donated dirt on the current site at A.D Penner Park.
