Steinbach city council will meet all day today for its annual summer study session. Mayor Earl Funk says it is one of the fullest agendas he can ever remember seeing.

Funk says one of the items council will discuss is the future of recreation facilities in the city.

"Council is very aware of the recreational and cultural shortfalls in our community," says Funk. "We're very interested in looking at building some facility that will definitely help out in that area."

(Steinbach Mayor Earl Funk)He expects there will be talk about the potential for a new spectator arena or multiplex.

"Where we're going to be at the end of the day, I don't know," admits Funk. "It all depends how discussion works."

Funk says council will also discuss next year's budget.

"The study session, it's kind of exciting for me this time because this is the very first budget that this council will be working on from start to finish," he says.

Funk does not anticipate council will make a decision today whether or not to raise or lower taxes, but says they should have a good idea as to what the preliminary numbers look like.

"We've got lots of projects that we want to talk about and start working on, and so it's going to be a very, very full day," says Funk. "This is one of our fullest agendas that I can ever remember having in summer study session."
