It was a memorable first full Western Hockey League season filled with highlights and accolades for Moose Jaw Warriors defenseman Denton Mateychuk.

The 17-year-old Dominion City native, who recorded 13 goals and 51 assists in 65 regular season games, was named the Western Hockey League's East Division nominee for Defenseman of the Year and was chosen an East Division First Team All-Star.

Mateychuk was also selected to play in the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Kitchener where he was named captain for the victorious Team White.

The Warriors eliminated the Saskatoon Blades in round one of the WHL playoffs and then lost out to the Winnipeg Ice in five games in round two.

Mateychuk, who will graduate from Roseau Valley School later this month, is 14th among North American skaters in the NHL's Central Scouting final rankings and is projected to be a first round selection in the 2022 NHL Draft which will be held July 7th and 8th in Montreal.

The former Eastman Selects blueliner played eight games with the Steinbach Pistons before the 2020-21 Manitoba Junior Hockey League season was shutdown and eventually cancelled in early November.

Mateychuk joined the Warriors three months later and played 16 games for Moose Jaw in the bubble in Regina.
