Brent McKean's incredible photo of the moon

Local Photographer Brent McKean recently captured an incredible photo of the moon that displays a number of interesting phenomena.

McKean says he has been getting some attention for this particular photo and a meteorologist from Harvard contacted him to explain everything that is going on in the shot and tell just how incredibly rare it is. He notes most "moon halos" are 22-degree halos and are a perfect circle, however in this shot, there is a circumscribed arc which is 29 degrees. In addition, there is a bright corona, the coloured section around the moon, two moon dogs, and an upper and lower arc.

Not only has a meteorologist from Harvard contacted him, but McKean says various media outlets around the world have published the photo including BBC, Washington Post, numbers outlets Brazil, Argentina, France, England, Australia, Turkey, and it was also the photo of the day for NASA.

He notes it is very neat to have his work shared all over the world and it is great to show people the stunning beauty of Manitoba.
