Southeast Manitoba was represented at the National Aboriginal Hockey Championship this month in Nova Scotia where Team Manitoba took the gold medal after beating Ontario 3-2 in the final.

Ariana Wery says this was quite an experience.

“It was very nerve wracking because there were so many good girls there, like Oceane Asham, her dad being in the NHL,” Wery says. “It was very competitive as well. I felt like I had to do way better because everybody was so good there.”

Wery got her hockey start with Ste. Anne Timbits, she has also played for Seine River girls and then spent five years with Eastman.

“I’ve been training with Bailey Bram and she's one of the Canadian players so it's always been a great opportunity to work with her, along with Phil Bram and joining his camps so I can learn more and then do off ice training to get in shape,” she says.

Wery plans to continue her hockey career in Canada.

“My future plan is to get scouted somewhere, but due to COVID I was unable to get scouted this year,” she says. “But I'm going to U of M and trying to get into a league so that I can potentially be scouted for next year and I had been in contact with Alberta, Calgary because I want to stay in my home country.”
