The Manitoba Good Roads Association Best Urban Home Grounds award goes to Denis and Nicole Vielfaure in the Village of La Broquerie.

Nicole Vielfaure says the La Broquerie council nominated their yard, which overlooks the La Verendrye golf course. She notes her and her husband made a landscape plan with Sunshine Nursery, who they hired to do the work over the course of a few years.

"I think I love the way they fixed it up with the porch, to make it look so comfortable and to be able to sit out and just enjoy the yard. And having my fruit patch so I can go pick up my own strawberries and raspberries, which is so nice."

Vielfaure says people often stop to admire their yard and there are interesting features including an artisan pond, which her children used to swim in during the summer and skate on during the winter, as well as two early 1900's cars.

"My husband found them in a field and we fell in love with them," she notes. "We knew we couldn't fix them but we thought they could make beautiful lawn ornaments. It was a journey. We had to go down [near Rossburn, MB] and there were trees that were growing into these cars. So, we had to cut a few branches to get the cars out, lift them onto a trailer, and it took two trips to bring them back."

She adds when her youngest son graduated high school, the class took their graduation photos in their yard, as well, a friend of their son's took his wedding photos there, and this year when their oldest son gets married, he will be taking photos on their property.

Vielfaure says the continued upkeep of the yard is thanks to Denis and Philis Mehling.
