John Richard Hildebrandt, 80, of Orillia, Ontario formerly of Winnipeg and Blumenort near Gretna, passed away Thursday, January 20th at Orillia Soldiers Memorial Hospital. He is survived by 3 sisters, 2 brothers and their families. He was predeceased by his parents Henry E. and Margaret Hildebrandt, 1 sister, 1 brother, and 2 brothers-in-law.
Cremation will take place with ash interment and service at Blumenort Cemetery later this summer.

John Richard Hildebrandt was born November 22, 1941 at the Altona Hospital in Manitoba. John grew up on the farm at Blumenort near Gretna, the third child of 8. John went to South Park School, the two room country school in the village, and then the MCI (Mennonite Collegiate Institute) in Gretna.

John worked diligently in all he did, in studying, working on the family farm, and as an employee. After the family farm was sold, John moved to Winnipeg, where he worked as a Health Care Aid at Fort Garry Care Centre until his retirement.

John’s faith was very important to him. He was baptized at age 18 at the Gretna Bergthaler Church, the family church. In Winnipeg he attended the Southlands Salvation Army Church where he made close friends and felt supported by them. In 2019 John moved to Orillia, Ontario to be close to family. St. Paul’s United Church was the church he attended there and sadly missed the in person services under Covid restrictions.

John’s health deteriorated in his last years, but he took pleasure in sharing his life with family in Orillia and looking out over Lake Couchiching and at his sister’s cottage. He especially enjoyed family dinners with home cooking and desserts.

After a sudden decline, John passed away peacefully at Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Orillia with family by his side on January 20, 2022.

John was a dearly loved, kind, loving brother, generous to a fault. He cherished his family. He was so proud of his nieces and nephews and always took interest in their activities.

John was predeceased by his parents Margaret and Henry, his brother David, sister Dorothy, and brothers in law Robert Berg and Raymond Friesen.
There will be a service and burial at the Blumenort Cemetery at a later date.
