Jo Unger, manager and owner of the Dairy Queen in Steinbach

The Dairy Queen in Steinbach has been around for 27 years. Jo Unger is the current manager and celebrated her 25th anniversary on Thursday.

She says there have been a lot of great moments over the years leading to many fond memories. “I've seen a lot of staff come and go,” Unger explains. “I'm very excited there have been so many people who have had their basic training ground right in this restaurant.”

The DQ location in Steinbach held its anniversary celebration from 11am to 11pm and it allowed the community to join in the celebration.

“We're going to celebrate 25 years, it's kind of like my anniversary but it's your treat. The .25¢ ice cream cones represent 25 years. The .99¢ hamburgers, that's something I used to do to try and get myself on the map, so it's more of a nostalgia thing.”

Unger notes she's always tried to keep people as the focus, and she remembers the “Golden Rule” when dealing with people. “I've always said, watch what you do with people because you never know. Ten, twenty years from now, they could be the brain surgeon working on you, or they could be pulling your teeth. They could also be the person that you have to ask for a loan from. So always treat everyone right.”

Unger says the future looks bright for business and she has goals she'd like to see accomplished. As a result she notes she's not done yet.

At the end of the night on Thursday there were 1929 hamburgers sold and 2002 ice cream cones sold within the 12 hours of celebration.
