There will be a lot of activity this spring and summer on a vacant lot along Main Street at Kroeker Avenue in Steinbach. That is the site of a former Imperial Oil petroleum bulk plant and distribution facility that was closed around 1994. Christine Randall of Imperial Oil explains what will be happening.

"The work is going to include soil excavation. We'll be taking the soil, digging it up, taking it off site and replacing it with clean soil. The work is currently planned to begin in May."

Randall declined to say how deep they'd be digging, saying that is confidential. The company did extensive drilling on the site last year to determine the extent of contamination. She adds the project will take about four months.

"We will be completing the work, likely, in 16 weeks. We'll be making reasonable efforts to minimize any inconveniences to the residents."

Randall won't say what the future plans are there.

"We're not going to comment on future plans at this time. We're going to wait until this work is done, do some further testing and make decisions at that time."
