The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) is investigating Wednesday morning's incident which saw a man pronounced dead in Niverville following a police shooting.

The IIU says it was notified on Wednesday of the incident involving both the Winnipeg Police Service and RCMP.

According to the IIU, at approximately 12:40 am, police officers were notified to look out for a stolen vehicle whose occupants may be in possession of a firearm. Air1 tracked the vehicle to Otterburne near Providence, where at approximately 1:50 am, the suspect vehicle rammed a Winnipeg Police vehicle. Officers discharged their firearms at the suspect vehicle, which fled the scene.

The IIU says police tracked the vehicle and its occupants to Drovers Run in Niverville, where officers located a male with a gunshot wound. Officers requested an ambulance and provided first aid, but the male was pronounced dead on scene.

One female is in custody and one male fled the scene.

As this matter involves a fatality, the IIU will request the Manitoba Police Commission appoint a civilian monitor.

Witnesses or individuals who have information or video footage that may assist the investigation are asked to contact the IIU toll-free at 1-844-667-6060.

The IIU says that the investigation is ongoing and no further details will be provided at this time.
