Police have confirmed, the fire that destroyed an abandoned house near La Broquerie last week, was deliberately set.

On Tuesday afternoon, at approximately 4:15 pm, Steinbach RCMP were called to the fire along Road 39E or Kokomo Road, southwest of La Broquerie. Through neighbourhood inquiries, RCMP have learned that an hour prior to the fire, a grey Mazda 3 was seen parked at the end of the driveway and the front door to the house was seen open.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Steinbach RCMP or Crime Stoppers.

La Broquerie Fire Chief Al Nadeau says that house was an abandoned grow-op house. About eight to ten years ago, a marijuana grow operation was dismantled there. Nadeau says it had been boarded up ever since but now in recent years some people started removing the boards. It was the site of frequent parties. The owner of the house did not have insurance.
