The cause of the fire that devastated an apartment complex along Oak Avenue in Grunthal on Monday has been determined.

After an investigation, the Office of The Fire Commissioner discovered that there were actually two fires at this scene. Investigators say the initial fire began on Sunday and was caused by an improperly used humidifier, while the second, on Monday, was caused by a space heater plugged into an extension cord.

According to the OFC, these fires were unrelated.

Grunthal’s District Fire Chief Dan Hiebert, says his firefighters attended Sunday's fire and completely put it out. However, Hanover crews were unable to extinguish this second fire until significant damage had been done.

The building was a total loss and the total damage estimate comes to $600,000.

The OFC has deemed both fires "accidental".
