The Steinbach Regional Secondary School has hit a small bump on the ice after starting the 2016-2017 Winnipeg High School Hockey League season on a four-game win streak.

Tyler Szun scored twice as the St. Paul's Crusaders defeated the SRSS 5-3 Tuesday at MTS Iceplex in Winnipeg handing the Sabres their second loss of the week.

"Every time we play St. Paul's it's a really competitive game," said Sabres head coach Lawney Penner. "They're fast, they do things in the offensive zone that other teams don't do as far as different cycles, different systems. I thought some of our boys reacted well to some of the things we're doing but for the big picture, we have to go back to practice and be ready for St. Paul's the second time."

Matthew Broesky had a pair of goals for the SRSS.

Hyde Rickard also scored for Steinbach Regional.

The Sabres defeated College Beliveau 6-2; shutout Glenlawn 9-0; shaded Shaftesbury 4-3 in overtime and blanked Sanford 3-0 before losing 4-3 to College Pierre Elliott Trudeau on Monday.

"Early on we only had one league game per week but we went to two tournaments so we did get games in bunches," said coach Penner who has a veteran team to work with this season as there is only one grade 10 on the roster. "Now that our tournaments have slowed down, we have a couple of back-to-backs but the guys are young and in good shape. I'm not going to use that as an excuse."

This is year four for high school hockey at Steinbach Regional and Penner says the program continues to thrive.

"For the second year in a row, we've had large numbers at tryouts. Guys are excited to try out and excited to play for our team. We hope to continue building this program in the right direction."
