The fire that forced twelve families from their Niverville apartment complex Thursday morning has been declared accidental in nature.

Beginning in the third storey of the building, the blaze moved to the attic where it smouldered for quite some time before Niverville fire crews were able to extinguish it completely.

After investigating the cause of the blaze, The Office of the Fire Commissioner has determined it was caused by an electrical malfunction. Officials add the apartment sustained three million dollars worth of damage during the fire, but whether or not it is a total loss will be dependant on the property owner's insurance.

Meanwhile, the OFC credits a working fire alarm system for saving lives; had alarms not gone off just before 2 AM when the fire ignited, people could have been seriously injured or killed.
