South Eastman Health continues to face a challenge finding doctors to cover weekend emergency room shifts at Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach.

Chief Executive Officer Monique Vielfaure-Mckenzie says they made it through the summer months with few disruptions.  However, there are 9 shifts in September that have not yet been filled and there is a possibility of some temporary closures.  She notes staff are spending a couple of days a week on this situation, something that has become very stressful.  Vielfaure-Mckenzie says many general practitioners no longer feel comfortable handling emergency room work because it has become so specialized.
