Eastman Tourism is redirecting its focus to exclusively local demographics.

“There is no international travel,” says Executive Director Jenny Dupas, “or even inter-provincial, so all of the funding will be primarily focused in Manitoba.”

In the past, Travel Manitoba has taken care of international tourism interests while Eastman Tourism has always advertised locally, but with international travel now up in the air, Dupas says budget cuts are coming.

“We have to reduce the printing of our visitor guide next year, so that will help,” says Dupas before sharing that additional cuts will be discussed at their next meeting this month.

Dupas says the organization is still optimistic that their ‘Home is Where the Heart Is’ campaign can provide enjoyment for Manitobans making summer “staycation” plans. “We still want to see people getting out, even if it’s just a day trip.”

Dupas encourages people to go camping and fishing before mentioning museums will be open to the public again starting in July.

“The biggest resource we have in Manitoba is all that natural beauty,” offers Dupas, “so we want people to get out on the trails and do some hiking.”

Dupas is also pleased that gatherings of 50 people are getting the go-ahead as it allows for many markets and events to evade cancellation.

Commenting on some of the shyness she has perceived since COVID-19 restrictions were introduced Dupas offers a suggestion.

“Just enjoy nature, and talk to people,” she says, “it’s OK to talk to people.”
