Corn harvest is well underway in southern Manitoba.

Pam de Rocquigny, Cereal Specialist with Manitoba Agriculture, says growers are reporting variable yields.

"In the central region, the main corn growing area, early yield reports range from 90 to 140 bushels an acre, so not too bad," she says. "In the eastern region we're hearing a little bit lower yields - anywhere from 75 to 125. I think the lack of precipitation over the growing season is having an impact on yield."

She says most samples are slightly below the target bushel weight of 56 pounds per bushel.

"So far we're seeing a minimal impact from frost on bushel weights. As harvest progresses we'll get a better guage of what the quality of the crop is," she says.

According to de Rocquigny, moisture levels are averaging between 20 and 25 percent, with some growers reporting as low as 15.

Goss's Wilt was again prevalent in pockets of Manitoba's corn crop.

"We probably will see some impact to yields, but we haven't been able to quantify that to date. The dry conditions definitely helped to halt the disease when it was starting to develop."
