A couple of communities around the Southeast will be celebrating Canada Day with fireworks tonight.

Recreation programmer for Niverville, Chantel Todd says people are in for a treat. "Last year, we received a grant for Manitoba 150 but because of COVID, we were unable to use it for what we had anticipated it for but we were able to extend the grant to this year and we're doing an awesome fireworks display celebrating both Canada Day and Manitoba."

Todd adds having it tonight has brought a level of excitement to the town. "People appreciate the work that's gone into making this happen and having something positive to look forward to is also a very good thing."

"You won't need to leave your front yard or back yard, just as long as you face towards the south end of town," Todd adds. "They will be very, very high for everyone to see and enjoy."

In Richer, Darson Dueck says he can't wait for their show tonight. "It's one of the few in the province, they've been canceling like flies. It's great to have this for the people."

Dueck says that it won't be like a fireworks show from years past. "Normally we have a park that everyone can park inside and we'd have a ground show and a high show at the same time. This year, the park will be closed due to regulations, so we're strictly doing a high show. It'll be bigger shells, higher in the sky and it's something the whole community is able to see."

The Niverville show starts at 11:00 pm while the Richer show starts at dusk.
