Steinbach’s Assistant Fire Chief says the quick actions of one of their firefighters prevented a collector’s truck from going up in flames.

Russ Reimer says they were called to the intersection of Giesbrecht Street and Highway 52 at about two o’clock Monday afternoon.

They arrived to find an old GMC pickup parked on the parking lot at Loewen. Reimer says a small fire had broken out on the transmission of the truck. The driver pulled into the parking lot and there, an employee at the window manufacturer, who happens to be a Steinbach firefighter, pulled out an extinguisher and quickly extinguished the fire.

Reimer says had it not been for this firefighter, the damage would have been much worse.

Crews were on scene for about half an hour.

Reimer says there were no injuries.
