The Panthers first ever Provincial AAA High School varsity girls volleyball championship banner is being proudly displayed at the entrance of the Niverville High School.

The Zone 13 champions defeated the Leo Remillard Renards 25-16, 23-25, 15-4 in the provincial final last weekend at Calvin Christian Collegiate in Winnipeg.

Niverville swept Transcona, Leo Remillard and Swan Valley in the round robin and finished first in Pool One.

The Panthers downed Stonewall 25-11, 25-15 in the quarterfinals and then beat Swan Valley 23-25, 25-14, 15-5 in the semifinals.

Niverville's Melissa Zapp was outstanding at the service line in the deciding third sets against both the Tigers and Renards as she reeled off runs of nine points and 10 points in the two matches.

Setter Malia Thiessen was named the Provincials MVP while Zapp and Aysia Richards were named to the All-Star Team.

It's the second championship banner for a Panthers varsity girls volleyball team.

Niverville captured the AA championship in 1992.

Clayton Dreger asked Panthers coach Carl Fast if it's sunk in that the Panthers are AAA varsity girls champions
