It appears a cigarette butt may have caused a small ditch fire Monday morning along Provincial Road 216 north of Kleefeld. Fire crews were called to the scene shortly after 10:00. Deputy chief John Schroeder says the fire was quickly contained. He believes it was not started intentionally but figures it could have been caused by a flicked cigarette butt. Schroeder reminds us it is still much too dry to be starting fires. Meantime, an estimated $300,000 worth of hay went up in smoke Friday near Dufrost. A stack of 3,000 bales caught fire early that morning. RCMP say the suspected cause is spontaneous combustion.
