The ice surface in the Centennial Arena in Steinbach will be better lit when it opens for the season at the end of August. Russ Dyck, head of Parks and Recreation, says both the lights and the ceiling over the ice surface are being replaced this summer which will make it brighter.

"It'll be a brighter, more white light. We're putting in LED lighting, replacing 36 old 400-watt metal-halide lights with 52 LED lights."

Dyck notes they made quite a find when they tore down the old ceiling.

"We found a few pucks up in the old ceiling, 256 and-a-half to be exact. The new ceiling will be a similar looking product but it'll be sealed at all the joints so there won't be any more pucks disappearing into the ceiling."

He says all the work will be completed in time for the start of the next season at the end of August.
