The Canadian Cattlemen's Association has been closely watching the negotiations at the World Trade Organization.  John Masswohl is director of government and international relations.  He says gaining access to more foreign markets is key.  Masswohl points to Europe where we have virtually no market access due to a very small quota at a 20 per cent duty, and an over quota tariff of 140 per cent.  Japan slaps a 38.5 per cent duty on our beef, and can bump it up to 50 per cent whenever they want.  Masswohl stresses it's up to the Canadian WTO negotiating team to be aggressive in securing better market access for our beef.
