It was like Christmas for the students of Bothwell School.

Librarian Sue Chamberlin says they decided to hold a book swap during I Love To Read month and collected approximately 700 unwanted books from students and staff.

"Monday lunch kids came that had brought in books, we allowed those 47 kids to pick whatever number [of books] they brought in. So, for them it was like Christmas. I had 400 books left over after that first day so we decided to open it up to the entire school. Whoever wanted books came to the library and grabbed whatever they wanted."

Chamberlin says books that are left over and not claimed will be given to Share The Magic, a local organization that gives books to children who don't have any. She adds the book swap has been a great way to encourage literacy with the students and given them an excuse to keep reading.

"So many kids came to me and said, 'I can keep these, I don't have to bring them back?' So, it's a huge deal for kids to build libraries at home too, they just got so excited that they didn't have to be returned."

She says the book swap has been a success and is something she would like to continue in the years to come.
