Pathway that leads north from Loewen Boulevard

The City of Steinbach is taking a look at the specifications for walking and cycling pathways in the community. Mayor Chris Goertzen explains some of them may be too narrow. "Council recognizes that we have regular sidewalks, we have regional pathways that are used by mostly pedestrians and then we have shared regional pathways. These shared regional pathways, that have both cyclists and pedestrians, we do find that they are fairly narrow and the specs that we have for them may need to be altered."

Council has asked the administration to look into the feasibility of making future shared-use pathways three metres wide. The current specification is that they be two metres wide. Mayor Goertzen adds, "Council has made a decision to ask for a report on what we can do to make sure that regional pathways we build in the future can accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists and so we look forward to that report." He notes this would apply only to new pathways and would not be retroactive.
