Steinbach City Council has given first reading to a rezoning bylaw which would see another section of land developed on the south end of the city.

This proposed bylaw sets up the 11th phase of the Harmony Lane development off McKenzie Boulevard.

The layout of the newly proposed phase of development Councillor Jake Hiebert seconded a motion to give the bylaw first reading.

"It is the south portion of Harmony Lane and it will develop another 37 new lots so obviously our market in housing is demand-driven and that is why this request is before council."

If approved the section of land will be rezoned from Development Reserve 1 to Residential Single Family, Harmony Lane will be extended, and both Bentley Bay and Carrera Cove will be created.

Councillor Jac Siemens says this is good news for the city as there is currently a shortage in lots on the market in Steinbach.

A public hearing must now be scheduled to give area residents a chance to provide feedback before second reading can be given.
