The Steinbach Fire Department has just come through their busiest June on record.

With 38 total calls including 7 wildfires, 4 vehicle collisions, and 2 vehicle fires, Chief Kelvin Toews says his firefighters did not get a lot of rest.

“One day in particular, we had 10 calls in a 24 hour period,” offers Toews, “we were out the entire day and only got back just before midnight.”

Steinbach fire crews were only dispatched 25 times in 2018 making this year’s number of calls a significant jump.

One reason Toews gives for this increase is the lack of any large amounts of moisture. Though the southeast has had some rain in recent days, Toews says the ground is still dangerously dry making it easy for fires to start and spread.

As July begins, Toews expects this fire streak will only continue unless the skies start being more generous with their rainfall.
