A 52-year-old male from Niverville was stabbed in the backyard of his residence early Thursday morning.

The St. Pierre RCMP received the report at 12:40 a.m. and when officers arrived at the residence a man was bleeding from an upper body stab wound.

St. Pierre RCMP say the victim heard noises in his garage and when he went to check on the disturbance he encountered a male and a struggle ensued. The male stabbed the victim once then fled.

With assistance from RCMP East District Police Dog Services and Headingley RCMP, police were able to locate the suspect quickly and take him into custody without incident.

A 20-year-old male from Niverville is charged with Break and Enter to Commit Indictable Offence of Assault with a Weapon, Break and Enter to Commit Indictable Offence of Assault Causing Bodily Harm, and Breach of Undertaking. RCMP say the two men knew each other.

The victim remains in hospital in stable condition and the investigation is ongoing.
