If you haven't yet signed your kids up for camp this year, worry not, as there is plenty of room left in a variety of camps.

See below for information on various camps, the dates they take place, and where to sign up.

Mennonite Heritage Village

Mennonite Heritage Village also holds camps during the summer, and all of there weeks still have room for more kids.

These include the following:

July 17-21, ages 8-10

July 24-28, ages 11-14

August 14-18, ages 7-11

August 21-25, ages 7-11

Robert Goertzen from MHV explains why the last two camps have a larger age range.

“Those are opportunities for kids to bring their friends or to come with their siblings or cousins who may not be in the same age category, but will still fit into the broad range of 7 to 11.”

He says the camps have a wide variety of activities, listing some of the camper's favourites.

"Making something in the blacksmith shop, learning how to do embroidery in the summer kitchen, going to the animal farm and learning how to take care of the animals, feeding them, and getting to know a little bit more about some of the farm animals.”

The campers will also get to ride on an old fire truck, play plenty of water games, make pioneer crafts, and play various group games.

Goertzen says day camps are a great alternative to overnight camps.

“Every day in the evening they can tell their parents about all the great things they did each day, so it's great to socialize with other friends, or to make new friends, and it's also a great way to learn a little bit about early settler history about the way things were done many, many years ago. It’s just a great environment.”

He notes that it's a great way for the kids to enjoy time outdoors.

“We've got lots of space to run around and explore the different heritage buildings and to learn a little bit more about the history of Steinbach and the southern Manitoba area.”

He loves to see the kids and the volunteers interacting with each other.

“I think one of the neat things is that they get to meet some of our volunteers who like to talk about some of these pioneer demonstrations,” he says. “I think connecting with volunteers, creating lifelong friendships, and just having fun in a wonderful outdoor environment are some of the highlights.”

Niverville Community Resource & Recreation Centre

Niverville Community Resource & Recreation Centre (CRRC) has a total of 28 camps running this summer which just started up last week.

Every camp at Niverville CRRC still has space for more kids.

Laura Hill with the Niverville CRRC says they have three age groups.

“There are three age groups, there are our kinder camps (ages 3-6), our 6-9 age group, and our 9-13 age group.”

Niverville CRRC day camps run Monday to Friday. Their full-day camps are 9am-4pm and the kinder camps are 9am-12pm.

She says day camps are a great opportunity for kids to connect with each other and build friendships.

“It's definitely very important for them to have time to make friends and do activities with friends in their community. Niverville is a small town, but it's growing, so I think it's really important for them to have those friendships and to expand on them through these really fun activities and themed camps that we have.”

Hill says they have the kids doing lots of activities outside.

“Even if we have a camp at the Rec Centre, they still spend time outdoors and in the sun. Lots of stuff to do outside and inside as well.”
