The annual gymkhana weekend is always a big deal in Sundown as families come out for some horsing around.

“It’s a fun horse show, fun games all played on the back of a horse,” says Carla Campbell. “And we actually draw a pretty big crowd for it.”

The two-day event brings in competitors and spectators from near and far. Campbell says it is one last hurrah before summer ends and kids return to school. She feels it is also important to make the event affordable.

“There's an entry fee for the gymkhana, there's registration, but you can come and enjoy the entire weekend without paying any admission,” Campbell says. “We just have a lot of things going on, a lot of kids' activities throughout the grounds. It's just it's a great family fun way to end the summer.”

While there is no admission fee to watch the games, the weekend raises money for a different charity each year. Some of the past recipients include Shevchenko Parent Advisory Council for a play structure, HEART (The Hutterian Emergency Aquatic Response Team which specializes in underwater search and recovery), and Shady Pines Ranch (equine therapy).

The activities for the 19th annual event kicked off on Saturday and continue Sunday with a pancake breakfast at 8am followed by Cowboy Church at 10am. Registration for the open gymkhana is at 12pm and all ages are welcome.
