The Director of Health Services at Bethesda Regional Health Centre in Steinbach says construction of the front entrance at the hospital remains on schedule.

Work began in late March on the project that will see an entrance area added, including elevator and enclosed stairway, as well as a drop-off canopy and enclosed access connecting the main entrance and emergency room.

Jan Gunness says they are still projecting completion in late October.

"I'm sure when folks drive down the street they can see that the cement pillar for the elevator is almost finished," says Gunness. "And you can see the link between both the ER and the front entrance taking shape."

Gunness says right now crews are working on getting the shell enclosed. They have built the floor and will spend the next couple of weeks finishing off the roof in order to begin installing the glass along the front of the walkway.

"We're just trying to get the building closed before the cooler weather arrives," she says. "And then they finish the work inside."

According to Gunness, the wet summer set them back a little bit, but she says they have made up that time and aside from the weather, there haven't been any other hurdles that have impeded progress. She adds the project is also still on budget.

"We're just a little past halfway through and so we're excited to see that it's starting to take shape and looking really good," says Gunness.

Meanwhile, she admits there is some confusion for patients and visitors trying to access the hospital, but Gunness says staff are doing what they can to help those who look lost. She adds parking can be a challenge with many stalls being unavailable during the construction process.
