Maple Leaf Construction has submitted the winning bid for Steinbach's summer construction program. It had the lowest of six tenders at $2.33 million to do all the water and sewer, paving and sidewalk projects planned by the city in 2017.

City councillor Jac Siemens moved approval of the contract, noting it is about $150,000 below what the city had budgeted. He notes the city's strategy of going to tender in the winter, instead of in spring, continues to save money for taxpayers.

"History has told us that when we bid projects in May and June is that your getting a more expensive project because they (construction companies) already have their work for the summer. By bidding this early in the process, the companies are looking for work and they're looking at getting work in and getting started earlier in the construction season. So That gives us better pricing on the projects."

Councillor Michael Zwaagstra seconded the motion.

"We're pleased that our Capital Works tender came in about $150,000 under budget. That is obviously helpful because we have some significant capital projects in regards to underground infrastructure, our asphalt overlay program and our sidewalks along Clearwater. So I'm very pleased that the tender came in just a little bit below our budget. That certainly makes it easier for those projects to go ahead."

City council was unanimous in approving the motion.
