The Fire Chief for Hanover has provided an update on the number of hogs that died in Friday morning's fire.

Paul Wiebe says it was a 3,000 sow operation and there were also 6,000 weanlings on site. Wiebe says it was a three-structure complex. Firefighters were able to save one structure, containing about 1,500 sows.

As of 10 am, the Kleefeld and New Bothwell fire departments are no longer at the scene.

***Update Friday, November 10 at 8:30 am***

The Fire Chief for Hanover says a significant number of hogs perished in a fire this morning north of Pansy.

The Grunthal Fire Department received the 911 call at approximately 6:45 am. Paul Wiebe says when they arrived on scene, the barn was engulfed in flames.

The barn has three sections; each containing hogs. Wiebe says two of the three sections are a total loss.

"There will be significant amount of animals lost," he says. "I won't say how many at this point."

As of 8:30 am, Wiebe says they are still trying to save one of the three sections and get those hogs out safely.

"Right now we're doing fine," he says. "So we'll focus on that and try and get them out."

Firefighters from Kleefeld and New Bothwell are also on scene.

Wiebe says the cause will be investigated.

A damage estimate has not been set.
