After years of pushing for a new school, Niverville Town Council is excited to finally be on the provinces short list.

Niverville Mayor Myron Dyck says even though this is not a formal announcement for a new school, it is still encouraging. He adds a lot of work has gone into presenting a case for the Town of Niverville.

“It feels good. Council currently and councils past have been working hard to let the province know and the school division know where Niverville is at, keeping them informed so yes, while not a formal announcement we are excited to know that the province acknowledges the priority.”

Dyck says the Town of Niverville has been in need of a new school for some time and it has become increasingly noticeable with many huts being added to the two currently schools.

“Census numbers show growth, they show the demographics being families with school age children and so it only goes to show that as more families move that have school age children the need for more classroom space would be required.”

Dyck says there is lots of room for a new school in the town. He notes town council has presented the school division with a few locations that would work, but it is up to the school division.

“There is land available, the school division is aware of the options, there may be others that they know of that they have not alerted us to as sometimes landowners like to keep things close to the chest, we understand that but this is another step and we look forward to seeing where it goes from here. At the end of the day, it will be the school division that will decide what is the best fit for them.”

Dyck thanks the trustees from Niverville, the Hanover School Division and MLA Shannon Marting for their hard work making sure the needs of Niverville are recognized.
