A civil engineering student from Niverville is being recognized for his exceptional success in the work placement portion of his education.

Daniel Wiebe has been named the Friends of Engineering Co-op Student of the Year. He says Friends of Engineering is an organization made up of engineering industry leaders in Manitoba that support the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Manitoba. He notes the field of candidates for the Co-op Student of the Year award is large.

"They give it to one student in the entire faculty so that includes civil, mechanical, computer, electrical, and biosystems engineering. Only one student from all of those sections of engineering is chosen and it is a $2,000 cash prize and you get named the co-op student of the year."

Wiebe says he is very honoured to be chosen this year as there were a lot of deserving candidates. He notes to win the award you must be a part of the co-op program which includes work placements in the industry.

"There is a couple of different criteria but essential the gist of it is that you have made a significant contribution to the workplace. You have either done a number of terms in the workplace or you have done really well in those work terms and got a really good reference or made a really good impression on your employer."

Wiebe adds not only is there a cash reward but this recognition also helps to bolster his standing with possible future employers.
