The Reeve of Hanover says his council has some concerns with how much money the municipality funds to the Red River Basin Commission.

The Commission works towards water quality and water protection issues within the basin. It is a link between Manitoba and U.S. relations.

Stan Toews says funding is per capita and this year Hanover will be paying $3,682.

"I think it's worth being part of it," says Toews. "They do a lot of studies and we get a lot of good information from that organization."

But Councillors have expressed concern with the funding formula. Because of Hanover's population, it pays more to the Red River Basin Commission than many municipalities along the Red River.

"We're not on the Red River so we don't get the flooding," notes Toews. "But we still attribute towards the flooding and so do the other municipalities that are further away in the Seine Rat District."

Toews says Hanover has asked Seine Rat River Conservation District to rather be the one sending the money from the municipalities and in this way it would include more members paying towards the Commission.
