Pistons tie franchise-long winning streak with victory over Monarchs
It wasn't the most dominating performance of the season, but the Steinbach Pistons managed to do enough to defeat the Winnipeg Monarchs on Tuesday night, matching a franchise-long winning streak of 15 games in the process. First period With nothing really on the line, locked in second position, the Steinbach Pistons didn't exactly light the ice on fire in the first few minutes, but thanks to some timely saves by Chris Quizi, the 20-year-old goaltender kept his team in the battle until they could find their legs. Nearing the midway point of the frame, the Pistons pushed for the opening goal, eventually earning it when Jackson Kostiuk tucked home his 14th of the season from his linemates Brett Kaiser and Sam Noad. Less than three minutes later, Cullen Ingebritson scored his 3rd of the season, as the scrappy, determined sniper managed to cash in on a rebound to make it 2-0. Eric Han and Max Powers-Brekke picked up the assists. Winnipeg cut the lead in half, scoring off a turnover at the defensive blueline, making it a 2-1 game. That score would hold the rest of the period, and the teams went into the break separated by just the single marker. Second period Two quick strikes by Steinbach pushed them far enough away that the Monarchs couldn't battle back. Under a minute and a half into the middle frame, from some incredibly sharp, nearly impossible angle, 16-year-old William Picklyk managed to tuck a puck up and under the crossbar, putting Steinbach up 3-1. For Picklyk, it was his 21st goal of the year, with Charlie Velner and Ingebritson getting credit for the assists. A couple of minutes later, it was Luke Bogart's turn to snipe a shot off the post and in, as the defender's 9th made it a 4-1 game. Marek Miller, back for his first game since February 20th, notched one assist while Evan Kabel picked up the secondary helper. The rest of the period went by without many overly exciting events, other than some more solid work by Quizi. Third period In the final frame, another turnover allowed the Monarchs to cut the lead in half again, cashing in on a bit of a lucky break to make it 4-2. Time kept melting away, and as the game got toward crunch time, the Pistons' penalty killers were called upon to keep the score where it was, which they did. After getting back to five-on-five, the Monarchs pulled their goalie, and with the net empty, Noad tucked home his 21st of the year, with Jackson Kostiuk getting the only assist. The horn sounded, and for the 15th straight game, the Pistons surrounded their goalie, celebrating a victory. Quizi's 20th victory of the year came after making 26 saves on the night. Steinbach's power play was 0-2, and the penalty kill went 2-2. Game notes Sam Noad hit the 100 career point plateau, while he also extended his point streak to 7 games Jackson Kostiuk skated in his 100th career MJHL game, and with two points, is at 102 career points. Cullen Ingebrtison, the games 1st star, scored his first goal since November 11th. Brett Kaiser skated in career game 194. William Picklyk has scored 3 goals in his last 4 games, and his 21 on the season puts him tied for 3rd on the team. Chris Quizi is 3rd in the MJHL with 20 wins. The 15 straight wins tie a franchise record set in the 2021-22 season. Up next Steinbach has one more road game in the regular season, which is Thursday against the Virden Oil Capitals. The final home game of the regular season is Saturday night vs. Selkirk.
