The Eastman Selects are 2-0 to start the 2023-24 Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League season. Malachi Thiessen, Jeremiah Warkentine, Steele Jowett and Eric Cote scored power play goals in Eastman’s 6-2 victory over the Kenora Thistles Sunday at the Sun Gro Centre in Beausejour. Finley Titterson and Mario Gagnon also scored for the Selects. Eastman netminder Samuel Fontaine made 13 saves. Isabella Carriere and Cheyenne Scott Cooke did the goal scoring and Addison Tomes made 29 saves as the Eastman Selects shutout the Yellowhead Chiefs 2-0 in their Manitoba Female U18 AAA Hockey League home opener in Niverville. The St. Malo Warriors won their season opener Sunday in Selkirk. Ashton Dubois had two goals and an assist as St. Malo downed the defending Capital Region Junior Hockey League champion Fisherman 5-2. Brady Gregoire, Zachary Maynard and Damon Johnson also scored for the Warriors. Jozse Gauthier-Urmos made 33 saves in net for St. Malo. The Winnipeg Jets play their fifth of six exhibition games tonight when they face the Flames in Calgary. On Sunday the Jets assigned defenseman Ashton Sautner and forwards Jansen Harkins, Jeff Malott, Kristian Reichel and Dominic Toninato to the American Hockey League’s Manitoba Moose. George Reed, one of the greatest running backs in CFL history, passed away Sunday one day before his 84th birthday. Reed played 13 seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders from 1963-1975. The nine-time CFL All-Star helped the Riders win the Grey Cup in 1966. Reid Carruthers Brad Jacobs, Derek Samagalski and Connor Njegovan defeated Matt Dunstone 9-8 in the men’s final at the 2023 PointsBet Invitational in Oakville, Ontario. Rachel Homan, Tracy Fleury, Emma Miskew and Sarah Wilkes downed Kerri Einarson 9-7 in the women’s final. Team Carruthers and Team Homan each pocketed $50,000 for their four straight wins. The Warren Wildcats beat the host Flames 21-25, 25-18, 15-7 in the final of the Steinbach Christian junior varsity girls volleyball tournament. The Landmark 96’ers lost to the Major Pratt/St. Lazare Trojans in the final of the Raiders varsity boys volleyball tournament in Goose Lake. The Trojans defeated the 96’ers 25-21, 25-20.
