The Eastman Selects are 2-0 to start the 2023-24 Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League season. Malachi Thiessen, Jeremiah Warkentine, Steele Jowett and Eric Cote scored power play goals in Eastman’s 6-2 victory over the Kenora Thistles Sunday at the Sun Gro Centre in Beausejour. The St. Malo Warriors won their season opener Sunday in Selkirk. Ashton Dubois had two goals and an assist as St. Malo downed the defending Capital Region Junior Hockey League champion Fisherman 5-2. George Reed, one of the greatest running backs in CFL history, passed away Sunday one day before his 84th birthday. Reed played 13 seasons with the Saskatchewan Roughriders from 1963-1975. The nine-time CFL All-Star helped the Riders win the Grey Cup in 1966. Reid Carruthers Brad Jacobs, Derek Samagalski and Connor Njegovan defeated Matt Dunstone 9-8 in the men’s final at the 2023 PointsBet Invitational in Oakville, Ontario.
