Rain, wind warnings in effect for southeastern Manitoba
Residents across southeastern Manitoba are waking up to a stormy Sunday as both rainfall and wind warnings remain in effect for the region, including Steinbach, Niverville, and Grunthal. Heavy rain expected through the day Environment Canada says an intense low pressure system is tracking through the southeastern corner of the province, bringing heavy rainfall and strong northerly winds. Between 35 and 60 millimetres of rain are expected before the system tapers off late this afternoon or evening. The rain, which began overnight, could lead to flash flooding and pooling water on roads. Localized flooding is possible in low-lying areas, and washouts could occur near rivers, creeks, and culverts. Strong northerly winds to follow Alongside the rainfall, a wind warning is also in place for the region. Northerly gusts up to 90 kilometres per hour are expected this morning and will continue into the afternoon before easing later in the day. Environment Canada cautions that the high winds may break tree branches, toss loose objects, and lead to power outages. Drivers, especially those in high-profile vehicles, are urged to use extra caution on open highways where strong crosswinds could make travel hazardous. Temperatures dropping through the day The forecast calls for rain, at times heavy, ending late this afternoon followed by cloudy skies and a 30 percent chance of lingering showers. Temperatures will fall to around 11 degrees this afternoon. Tonight will be mainly cloudy with fog patches developing overnight and a low near 3. Monday is expected to bring a mix of sun and cloud with a chance of early morning showers and a high of 12. Clear skies are expected Monday night with a low near -1. Environment Canada continues to monitor the system and advises residents to stay alert for updated warnings. Severe weather reports can be sent to MBstorm@ec.gc.ca or posted on X using #MBStorm.
