Rainfall warnings continue for much of southern Manitoba
Environment Canada has continued rainfall warnings for much of southern Manitoba, including Steinbach, following a night of intense thunderstorms and lightning. The warnings, issued early Saturday morning, cover communities from Steinbach and the Whiteshell to Morden, Selkirk, Winnipeg and Portage la Prairie. Up to 50 millimetres of rain is expected between Saturday evening and Sunday evening as a low-pressure system moves northeast across the province. “Scattered showers will organize into steadier rainfall this evening,” the agency said in its advisory. “Rainfall will be heavy at times tonight and Sunday and end Sunday afternoon or evening.” Officials warn heavy downpours could lead to flash flooding, water pooling on roads, and localized flooding in low-lying areas. The public is being urged to use caution and watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks and culverts. The warnings come after a line of storms rolled through southeastern Manitoba late Friday, bringing thunder and near-constant lightning that lit up the night sky over Winnipeg. Environment Canada says rainfall warnings are issued when significant amounts of rain are expected.
