Hanover School Division responds to death of student
A 15-year-old student from Steinbach was tragically killed in a train collision on Sunday, Aug. 31. Hanover School Division (HSD) superintendent, Joe Thiessen, says the division’s thoughts and prayers are with the family. “I can’t imagine what they are going through,” he says. Thiessen says the grade 10 student was from Steinbach Regional Secondary School (SRSS), and a message about the incident has been shared with staff and fellow students. He explains the 15-year-old was a member of the Sabres Football Team and had been meeting for practices already. The team and coaches met at 4 p.m. on Tuesday Sept. 2. “We had divisional guidance there along with social workers and our psychologists,” he says. “We know this can be really difficult for some of his teammates and friends, for sure.” Thiessen says the division will assess what further support is needed for staff and students. “We’re trying to support them as much as we can.”
