Near record long growing season ends with chilly morning
It was a frosty morning in southeastern Manitoba, but temperatures did not drop near as low as areas further west. Scott Kehler is a meteorologist with Weatherlogics. He says a number of weather stations in western Manitoba showed a low of -10 degrees overnight. Those areas are near the Saskatchewan border. "Generally, across Westman it was a killing freeze, with temperatures well below zero for several hours," he adds. Kehler says the overnight low in Steinbach was -1, while Winnipeg was -2. "There are some areas that did have a decent frost," he says. "But many areas did escape as the frost was a lot patchier than further west." Kehler says Tuesday morning's frost marks the end of the growing season for most of Southern Manitoba. He notes that while the growing season was already over in some areas prior to Tuesday, it is now officially over in Steinbach and area. The growing season lasted 152 days this year, which, according to Kehler, is about one month longer than normal. He notes the normal length for Steinbach is 120 days. "These longer growing seasons have been a bit of a trend lately," he notes. "It has been a fairly long-term trend." According to Kehler, in 2024, the growing season lasted 151 days, while in 2023 it lasted 155 days. He notes the all-time record is probably about 160 days. Kehler says the normal end date for the growing season in Steinbach and area is about the third week of September, but that has shifted to early October. On the flip side, he notes the May long weekend was historically the start of the growing season, but in recent years that has changed to early May. Meanwhile, after a few days of below normal temperatures, Wednesday should see a return to unseasonably mild weather. Kehler says highs should be in the upper teens. However, cooler and wetter weather is in the forecast for the latter part of the weekend. Kehler says he does not think there will be a lot of rain over the weekend, but rather just some showers.
