A vandal with a pellet gun defaced some city property last month and the Head of Steinbach Parks and Recreation says repairs are ongoing.

Russ Dyck says the incident happened in mid-July.

“It appears someone with a pellet gun shot out a few windows on the west side of the Steinbach Aquatic Centre and some mirrors in the washrooms at A.D. Penner Park.”

The mirrors in the A.D. Penner Park washroom are awaiting replacement.

Though the vandalism happened some time ago, Dyck says his crews are still waiting for the necessary replacement parts. He expects the new windows will arrive sometime in early September and says the mirrors have also been ordered though he is unsure of when they will be delivered.

In the meantime, Dyck says the mirror glass was taped to prevent injury, and the windows have been boarded up.

Dyck admits that vandalism may seem like a harmless crime, but says, in the end, it hurts local residents.

“Generally speaking, anything city-owned is ultimately paid for by the taxpayer. In this case, it is an insurance claim, but there are still time and repair costs. It might be fun for somebody in the short term, but this kind of mischief is costly.”

The RCMP confirmed that they did investigate this event, but say no suspects were ever found.
