This is one example of a pool that needs a fence around it

The nice weather we're enjoying is encouraging more talk about getting swimming pools ready for the summer.

Bob Kehler with the City of Steinbach says they're getting great cooperation from most pool owners when it comes to putting up fences and locks.

He notes the city and provincial by-laws have been in place for a few years now.  "I think most people are aware of it even the retailers that sell these pools are supposed to be making the customers aware of it also."

Kehler tells us the city doesn't have enough staff to search out the backyard swimming pools to enforce compliance, but he says they make time to respond to complaints.

If your pool is capable of holding more than two feet of water, it needs to have a fence around it so children can't climb over or under it.  The fence also needs to have a lockable gate.
